These lines written below have implications for organizational design, remuneration policies, motivational issues and more.
The main point of these well-written lines is encapsulated in the title of this post: even if a company is prestigious, pays its employees well, trains them well and provides good career prospects, employees often leave because their immediate supervisors don't treat them well.
I think what is most important here is that supervisors have a direct and daily impact on their immediate subordinates. One's salary once known is a relatively fixed expectation that should neither incentivise nor demotivate an employee. So an overbearing boss has a much greater impact than other positive influences. Conversely, I believe it is often possible for a great boss to make up for deficiencies in other areas.
The bit that really hit home in this article was:
It isn't the 100th blow that knocks a good man down. It's the 99 that went before.
Another nugget focused on the loss to the company from the departure of an employee. Apart from the financial costs of replacing the dearly departed, the article highlights
...the loss of the company's reputation. Every person who leaves a corporation then becomes its ambassador, for better or for worse. We all know of large IT companies that people would love to join and large television companies few want to go near. In both cases, former employees have left to tell their tales.
More than anything else, I am creating this post to remind myself how to treat any of my own future subordinates. I don't want to be the author's next case study!!!

“Alright, this is not cool at all. A recent survey by Nielsen has revealed that Indian women are the most stressed out in the world: 87% of our women feel stressed out most of the time. This statistic alone has caused me to stress out. Even in workaholic America, only 53% women feel stressed.

What are we doing to our women? I'm biased, but Indian women are the most beautiful in the world. As mothers, sisters, daughters, colleagues, wives and girlfriends - we love them. Can you imagine life without the ladies?

For now, i want to give Indian women five suggestions to reduce their stress levels.

One, don't ever think you are without power. Give it back to that mother-in-law J. Be who you are, not someone she wished you would be. She doesn't like you? That's her problem.

Two, if you are doing a good job at work and your boss doesn't value you - tell him that, or quit. Talented, hard-working people are much in demand.

Three, educate yourself, learn skills, network - figure out ways to be economically independent. So next time your husband tells you that you are not a good enough wife, mother or daughter-in-law, you can tell him to take a hike.

Four, do not ever feel stressed about having a dual responsibility of family and work. It is difficult, but not impossible. The trick is not to expect an A+ in every aspect of your life. You are not taking an exam, and you frankly can't score cent per cent (unless you are in SRCC, of course). It is okay if you don't make four dishes for lunch, one can fill their stomach with one. It is okay if you don't work until midnight and don't get a promotion. Nobody remembers their job designation on their dying day.

Five, most important, don't get competitive with other women. Someone will make a better scrapbook for her school project than you. Another will lose more weight with a better diet. Your neighbor may make a six-dabba tiffin for her husband, you don't - big deal. Do your best, but don't keep looking out for the report card, and definitely don't expect to top the class. There is no ideal woman in this world, and if you strive to become one, there will be only one thing you will achieve for certain - stress.

So breathe, chill and relax. Tell yourself you are beautiful, do your best and deserve a peaceful life. Anybody trying to take that away from you is making a mistake, not you. Your purpose of coming to this earth is not to please everyone. Your purpose is to offer what you have to the world, and have a good life in return. The next time this survey comes, i don't want to see Indian women on top of the list. I want them to be the happiest women in the world. Now smile, before your mother-in-law shouts at you for wasting your time reading the newspaper. “

Pakistan releases Indian prisoner Gopal Dass

Pakistan today released Indian national Gopal Dass, who has spent nearly 27 years in the Lahore Central Jail.

Dass had crossed over to Pakistan inadvertently and was arrested on charges of spying.

The Indian was sentenced to life imprisonment and was set to be released by the end of this year.

On March 27, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari had remitted the remaining jail term of Dass on humanitarian grounds following an appeal by the Indian Supreme Court.
It is also seen as a reciprocal gesture by Pakistan Government after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh invited Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to come to India to watch the cricket World Cup semi-final between India and Pakistan at Mohali.

Once Buddha was walking from one town to another town with a few of his followers.. This was in the initial days. While they were traveling, they happened to pass a lake. They stopped there and Buddha told one of his disciples, "I am thirsty. Do get me some water from that lake there."

The disciple walked up to the lake. When he reached it, he noticed that right at that moment, a bullock cart started crossing through the lake. As a result, the water became very muddy, very turbid. The disciple thought, "How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink!"

So he came back and told Buddha, "The water in there is very muddy. I don't think it is fit to drink." After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back to the lake and get him some water to drink. The disciple obediently went back to the lake.

This time too he found that the lake was muddy. He returned and informed Buddha about the same. After sometime, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back. The disciple reached the lake to find the lake absolutely clean and clear with pure water in it. The mud had settled down and the water above it looked fit to be had. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to Buddha.

Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the disciple and said," See what you did to make the water clean.
You let it be !!.... and the mud settled down on its own - and you got clear water. Your mind is also like that ! When it is disturbed, just let it be. Give it a little time. It will settle down on its own. You don't have to put in any effort to calm it down. It will happen. It is effortless.......

Japanese tsunami may have domino effect on India

A massive 10 magnitude quake hit the northeast coast of Japan on Friday, shaking buildings in the capital Tokyo, causing many injuries, at least one fire and triggering a four-metre (13-ft) tsunami.

However, India Tsunami Centre says there are no local alerts yet in wake of Japanese quake.

Nikkei average closed down 1.7% at 10,254.43 points after the earthquake struck.

Harendra Kumar, Head-Research, Centrum Broking said, "The earthquake in Japan has obviously prompted a negative sentiment in the market. That's the reason Sensex is going down. However, the economic impact of such natural calamity is yet to be assessed. Such assessment may give fresh trigger to the markets."

Sanjay Dutt of Quantum Securities also feels that the calamity in Japan may have a domino effect in India. Dutt said that the crisis is unlikely to erode much from the Indian shores, apart from affecting exports and oil.

Echoes Deven Choksey, KR Choksey Securities that the crisis may not have a direct impact on Indian economy and business. However, the Japanese crisis may have a far reaching effect on Indian auto components company.

"Commodities may get affected as crude prices will come down. Sectors like insurance and auto will face disruptions," Choksey. As a stratgey, Choksey advises investors to wait before taking out money from the market.

SuperMoon may cause natural disasters On March 19th 2011

Next week, the moon will make its closest approach to Earth in almost 20 years, possibly triggering earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other disasters.
The phenomenon, called lunar perigee or Supermoon, happens when the moon reaches its absolute closest point to Earth. On March 19, the natural satellite will be only 221,567 miles away from our planet.

There were Supermoons in 1955, 1974, 1992 and 2005, and these years had their share of extreme weather conditions, too. Although there are scientific laws that say the moon affects the Earth, it's still ambiguous whether the lunar perigee and natural disasters is coincidence or not.

British freelance weatherman John Kettley was quoted as saying "A moon can't cause a geological event like an earthquake, but it will cause a difference to the tide. If that combines with certain weather conditions, then that could cause a few problems for coastal areas."

Sex-for-marks scandal hits Jabalpur University

An alleged sex-for-marks scandal has come to light here, leading to the arrest of two Jabalpur University officials.

Controller of Examination Professor S S Rana and the Deputy Registrar R S Kakodia of Rani Durgawati Vishwavidyalaya (RDVV) here were arrested on March 1. Police had earlier arrested one Raju Khan in this case.

Two other accused, Prerna Atwal, a student, and one Ajay Khandelwal, are absconding, police said.

According to the complaint filed by S Arya, a first-year MBBS student of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College last month, Prerna, her senior in the college, told her that she would have to sleep with Khan if she wanted to get her marks increased in the revaluation.

Prerna allegedly told her that Khan had contacts in the Varsity, and also revealed that the complainant had failed in two subjects, though the results were not yet declared.

Following which, police have seized all the answersheets of first year MBBS exam.

Lady Gaga has revealed that she lost her virginity when she was a teenager and also admitted that it was a ''terrible'' experience.

The 'Born This Way' singer said she didn't enjoy sex for the first time because she wasn't fully prepared.
"I didn't lose my virginity until I was 17. But I have to say even then I wasn't ready and it was an absolutely terrible experience," the Daily Telegraph quote her as telling Britain's Grazia magazine.

Salary earners with income till 5 Lakh need not file returns

Salary earners having an income of less than Rs 5 lakhs will not have to file tax returns from this year, a finance ministry official said.
"Salaried people, may be up to Rs 5 lakh...they need not file the (income tax) return," CBDT chairman Sudhir Chandra told reporters at the customary post-Budget press conference.

The exemption from filing tax returns come into effect from the assessment year 2011-12.

In case such a salary earner has income from other sources like dividend, interest etc. and does not want to file returns, he will have to disclose such income to his employer for tax deduction, Chandra said.
The government, he said, is working out a scheme and will notify it "very soon".

The Form 16 issued to salaried employees will be treated as Income Tax Return, he added.

IAS officer slapped child over scratch to car

A woman Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer here has been booked by the child rights panel for slapping a four-year-old girl who had accidentally caused an autorickshaw to scratch her car, officials said here Wednesday.

Sujata Dass, a 1978-batch Punjab-cadre IAS officer who is posted as secretary, vigilance inquiries, Punjab, has been booked by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). She had slapped the child, Garima, who is a nursery student, in full public view.

Garima was returning from school in an autorickshaw when the incident took place. The autorickshaw driver stopped the vehicle in the Sector 38 market to drop a child and stepped out with the ignition on.

In the meantime Dass, who stays here in Sector 39, reached there in her official Honda City car. Garima accidentally pulled the gear lever and the autorickshaw banged the rear door of the car. Infuriated, Dass came out and thrashed the child.

Following this, Garima's father reached the police station to lodge a complaint but a compromise was struck between the two parties as Dass apologised.

Garima is a nursery student at Delhi Public school in Sector 40 here.

However, a city-based NGO filed a complaint against the officer with NCPCR.

'A public servant cannot indulge in such incidents. This is a clear violation of the code of conduct and we would take an appropriate action. We have also sent a notice to Punjab government and sought a reply from them,' said a senior official of NCPCR.

It is not for you, but for others. If you carry this lighted lamp with you, others can see it. Then they will not collide with you."

The blind man started his journey carrying the lighted lamp with him. On the way, there was a storm. He waited under a tree and resumed his journey after the storm. Suddenly a stranger coming in the opposite direction collided with him and both of them fell down on the ground. The blind man shouted angrily, "Couldn't you see the lighted lamp in my hand, man? Are you blind?" The stranger replied, "I am not blind but your lamp was not burning." "I am sorry, dear", said the blind man. "I am blind and did not know that the flame was put off by the storm."

We boast that we are the good children of God and that His grace will protect us from all evil. But the divine light shining in us gets extinguished by our actions/reactions and then we may fall. Let us consciously guard the lamp of God & Goodness keep shining in our hearts. It will illuminate us and enlighten everyone around us.

While waiting to pick up my wife at the airport one day, I had one of those life-changing experiences that you hear other people talk about — the kind that sneaks up on you unexpectedly. This one occurred a mere two feet away from me. Straining to locate my wife among the passengers , I noticed a man coming toward me carrying two light bags.

He stopped right next to me to greet his family. First he looked to his youngest son (maybe six years old) & gave him a loving hug. I missed you so much!" His son smiled somewhat shyly, averted his eyes and replied softly, "Me, too, Dad !"

Then the man stood up, gazed in the eyes of his oldest son (maybe nine or ten) and said, "You're already quite the young man. I love you very much, Son!" They too hugged a most loving, tender hug. While this was happening, a baby girl (perhaps one or one-and-a-half) was squirming excitedly in her mother's arms, The man said, "Hi, baby girl!" as he gently took the child from her mother & quickly kissed her face.

"I've saved the best for last!". He gazed at his wife silently & said, "I love you so much!" They stared at each other's eyes, beaming big smiles at one another, while holding hands.

For an instant they reminded me of newly weds, but I knew by the age of their kids that they couldn't possibly be. I puzzled about it for a moment then realized how totally engrossed I was in the wonderful display of unconditional love not more than an arm's length away from me. I suddenly felt uncomfortable, as if I was invading something sacred, but was amazed to hear my own voice nervously ask this gentle man,"Wow !! How long have you two been married?

He said, "Been married for twelve years now", without breaking his gaze from his lovely wife's face. "Well then, how long have you been away?" I asked. The man finally turned and looked at me, still beaming his joyous smile. "Two whole days !"

Two days? I was stunned. By the intensity of the greeting, I had assumed he'd been gone for several months or even a year. I know my expression betrayed me.

I said almost offhandedly "I hope my marriage is still that passionate after twelve years!" The man suddenly stopped smiling. He looked me straight in the eye, and he told me something that left me a different person.

He told me, "Don't hope, friend… decide!"

Boeing unveils new 747-8 passenger plane

Boeing has unveiled a new 747 passenger jet to rival the Airbus A380.

The new Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental, which measures 250 feet in length, will be the world's longest passenger jet.

The 747-8 has a capacity of 467 passengers, 51 more than the current 747. It was introduced to an audience of 10,000 in a factory in Everett, Washington, yesterday.

The 747-8 also has 16 percent less carbon emissions per passenger, and a noise footprint that is reduced by 30 percent from its predecessor the 747-400, according to Boeing.

"The new 747-8 Intercontinental features the latest in innovative technologies -- applying many of the breakthroughs also found on the 787 Dreamliner," said Jim Albaugh, Boeing Commercial CEO, referring to the carbon-composite plane whose delivery has been delayed by three years.

"We think our customers will value the low operating costs and passengers will enjoy the comfort of the striking new interior," said Albaugh.

The redesigned interior consists of a new curved, upswept architecture that is intended to give passengers a greater sense of space. There's also more room for personal belongings on the new plane.

Reuters reported that the 747-8 is currently listed at US$317.5 million. So far, Boeing has secured 33 orders for the passenger jet, including orders from Lufthansa and Korean Air.

The first delivery will take place in the fourth quarter this year.

The freighter version of the 747-8 has already taken flight and is set for delivery later this year. Boeing has so far won 74 orders for the 747-8 freight.

A lady bought some bathing soaps from a shop. When she opened one of the packets, she found that it was empty. There was no soap in there; it was just an empty wrapper! She lodged a complaint against the manufacturer and got her claim. That being settled, there was a task before the management of the soap factory.

How had this happened? How could they ensure that the incident did not occur again? They had suffered enough bad publicity besides having to pay the compensation to the lady.

After a detailed investigation, it was discovered, that during the process of wrapping, it so happened that inevitably, one or two wrappers did get through, having no bar of soap in them! There was no way to make out the difference between a full wrapper and an empty one. The process of handling each one separately for this purpose seemed to be very cumbersome. So, the company devised a method to overcome the problem which cost a huge amount.

After a lot of thinking and brain storming, the presentation was made to the entire work force wanting to know their opinion. An experienced and one of oldest employee of the company said, "Excuse me Sir, for my impertinence, but I have a solution that shall cost a fraction of what you are planning to go in for."

They hesitated initially. But eventually they heard him out and agreed to try out his proposal. The next day, the worker brought a strong industrial fan. He put it at an angle near the conveyor belt on which the packed soap bars were coming through and switched it on. The few empty wrappers that came through got blown off by the fan! The rest of them went past easily.

A simple solution, for a complex problem! This goes to prove that ideas are not the monopoly of the BEST; it could sometime come from the most unexpected. Beware of Ego. It is a sword with two edges. The outer edge cuts your Popularity..! While the inner edge cuts your Purity..!!

One young academically excellent person went to apply for a managerial position in a big company.
He passed the first interview; the director did the last interview, made the last decision.
The director discovered from the CV that the youth's academic achievements were excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research, never had a year when he did not score.

The director asked, "Did you obtain any scholarships in school?" the youth answered "none".
The director asked, "Was it your father who paid for your school fees?"

The youth answered, "My father passed away when I was one year old, it was my mother who paid for my school fees.

The director asked, "Where did your mother work?"

The youth answered, "My mother worked as clothes cleaner. The director requested the youth to show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect.
The director asked, "Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?" The youth answered, "Never, my mother always wanted me to study and read more books. Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me.
The director said, "I have a request. When you go back today, clean your mother's hands and then see me tomorrow morning".

The youth felt that his chance of landing the job was high. When he went back, he happily requested his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange, happy but with mixed feelings, she showed her hands to the kid.
The youth cleaned his mother's hands slowly. His tear fell as he did that. It was the first time he noticed that his mother's hands were so wrinkled, and there were so many bruises in her hands. Some bruises were so painful that his mother shivered when they were cleaned with water.

This was the first time the youth realized that it was this pair of hands that washed the clothes everyday to enable him to pay the school fee. The bruises in the mother's hands were the price that the mother had to pay for his graduation, academic excellence and his future.

After finishing the cleaning of his mother hands, the youth quietly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother. That night, mother and son talked for a very long time.

Next morning, the youth went to the director's office. The Director noticed the moist eyes of the young man, asked: "Can you tell me what have you done and learned yesterday in your house?"

The youth answered" I cleaned my mother's hand, and also finished cleaning all the remaining clothes' The Director asked, "Please tell me your feelings."

The youth said:

Number 1, I know now what is appreciation. Without my mother, there would not have been A successful me today.

Number 2, by working together and helping my mother, I now realize how difficult and tough it is to get something done.

Number 3, I have come to appreciate the importance and value of relationship ( Be it a family, friend or even a colleague).

The director said, "This is what I am looking for to be in an person, who could appreciate others in small and big things, you are hired.

Later on, this young person worked very hard, and received the respect of ALL.

A child, who has been protected and habitually given whatever he wanted, would develop "entitlement mentality" and would always put him first. He would be ignorant of his parent's efforts. When he starts work, he assumes that every person must listen to him, and when he comes open in this WORLD on his own,

he would never know the sufferings of others and would always blame others. For this kind of individuals, who may be good in all, may be successful for a while, but eventually would not feel sense of achievement. They will grumble and be full of hatred and fight for more.

Let us all get to the grass root of learning, You can let your kid's, siblings, friends get the best of all. But, let them experience the most basics of all like when you are cutting grass, please let them experience it. After a meal, let them wash their plates/bowls together. It is not because you do not have facility, but instead you want them to UNDERSTAND, no matter how rich or poor we are, one day we all grow grey, same as the mother of that young person. The most important thing is to learn how to appreciate the effort and experience the difficulty & learns the ability to work with others to get things done.

Abuse of sick leave: You are sick and taking leave, that's fine. You are not sick, but you are taking leave telling that you are sick - a really annoying thing that your boss simply hates. As per recent studies, one out of three employees who calls in sick really isn't. About 32 percent of U.S. employees called in sick when they really weren't in 2009, as per CareerBuilder's annual absenteeism survey of 4,700 workers.

Intolerable cell phone behavior: You are in a meeting and your cell phone rings again and again. It can be the major contributor to your boss's dislike towards you. Adding to it, receiving multiple phone calls at work is never appropriate. Bosses also hate employees peeping on their cell phones while at work.

Not communicating things properly: Proper communication between the bosses and employees is the key to success for every organization. Employees should have good communicating skills otherwise chances are there for the boss to get irritated. If you are not able to complete your task within the deadline, rather than ignoring your bosses reminder mails communicate the reason why you are not able to meet the deadline.

Lousy table manners: Bosses obviously develop a dislike to those employees who display poor table manners during a luncheon meeting with a client. Always be very careful while you are in a meeting as a lousy table can cause embarrassment in front of your clients.

Over eagerness: Bosses don't like those employees who are overeager. Very often people think that by showing over eagerness they can attract their boss's attention and can impress them with their new ideas. But on the contrary it is likely to generate disliking in their boss's mind towards them.

Unreliable: Employees who say one thing, but end up doing the other and those who cannot complete the assigned task and give excuses are certainly not in their boss's good book. Very often they create headaches for bosses.

Argumentative to the boss: If you think you should argue for your right with your boss, think twice. This could be a good incentive for disliking you. Even arguing with your co-workers can also create trouble for you. Being argumentative is a big no-no.

Clumsy appearance: Always maintain a good hygiene while coming to office. Dress up yourself properly. Bosses don't like those employees who don't maintain proper hygiene.

Talk about personal problems: Bosses tend to hate employees talking endlessly about their person problems to them or even to the co-workers. Stop doing that or it will create disliking in your boss's mind towards you.

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly. So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!' This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks.. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets..

The bottom line is that successful/sensible people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so.... Love the people who treat you right. Forgive the ones who don't.

PHULBANI (Orissa): Intense cold wave is sweeping across Orissa's Kandhmal district for the last one week paralysing normal life as the minimum temperature plummeted to 4.2 degree celsius today.

Normal life was severely affected in Daringbadi, Kotagarh, Tumudibandha, Balliguda, Raikia, Phulbani and Tikabali due to cold.

The lowest temperature of the season 4.2 was recorded at Daringbadi, while in the district headquarter town of Phulbani the mercury dropped to 5.8 degree celsius, local Meteorological Observatory sources said.

The homeless people have become the worst victim of the intense cold. Vegetable cultivation and Rabi crops will be damaged if such a condition persists, some farmers at Tikabali have opined.

The business executive was deep in debt and could see no way out. Creditors were closing in on him. Suppliers were demanding payment. He sat on the park bench, head in hands, wondering if anything could save his company from bankruptcy.

Suddenly an old man appeared before him. "I can see that something is troubling you," he said. After listening to the executive's woes, the old man said, "I believe I can help you."

He asked the man his name, wrote out a check, and pushed it into his hand saying, "Take this money. Meet me here exactly one year from today, and you can pay me back at that time." The business executive saw in his hand a check for $500,000, signed by John D. Rockefeller, then one of the richest men in the world!

"I can erase my money worries in an instant!" he realized. But instead, the executive decided to put the un-cashed check in his safe. Just knowing it was there might give him the strength to work out a way to save his business, he thought.

With renewed optimism, he negotiated better deals and extended terms of payment. He closed several big sales. Within a few months, he was out of debt and making money once again.

One year later, he returned to the park with the un-cashed check. At the agreed-upon time, the old man appeared. But just as the executive was about to hand back the check and share his success story, a nurse came running up and grabbed the old man.

"I'm so glad I caught him!" she cried. "I hope he hasn't been bothering you. He's always escaping from the home and telling people he's John D. Rockefeller."And she led the old man away.

IBM signs 10-year outsourcing deal with Jet Airways

India saves $30 Billion of U.S., Europe

Bangalore: U.S. and European companies saved a whopping $25 to $30 billion in 2009 alone on account of their outsourcing work to Indian companies. U.S.-based customers are seen to have saved $14-19 billion and European ones $9-12 billion, reports The Times of India.

According to a recently concluded study by Nasscom in association with research firm Evalueserve, the information technology and business process outsourcing (IT & BPO) sector accounts for 6 percent of the country's GDP, a quantum jump from 1.2 percent just a decade ago. The study estimates that by 2020, the sector will account for 10 percent of the country's GDP and 14 percent of the total services sector revenues.

Nasscom president Som Mittal said that the industry has contributed significantly to the development of the American and European economies. Amidst allegations that outsourcing has increased unemployment in U.S., the study reveals that the off-shoring has created over 250,000 direct and indirect jobs across the U.S. during 2004-2007. In 2007, $2.75 billion was contributed by Indian firms to the U.S. economy in the form of taxes and administrative expenses incurred by their onsite offices.

The IT-BPO sector have contributed to 10 percent of the country's service sector revenues, its unique "service-led" export oriented model contributed 9 percent of the country's incremental GDP. The per capita GDP contribution of IT-BPO employees is 80 times that of agriculture. The industry grew twice as fast as the total Indian exports over the past decade and contributed 14 percent of the country's total exports.

Boston: An Indian-American CEO of an IT company has been sentenced to 20 months imprisonment and ordered to pay over $800,000 in restitution for his role in a bribery and kickback scheme.

Sushil Bansal, 43, President and CEO of Advanced Integrated Technology Corporation, will also serve a three-year period of supervised release following release from his two concurrent 20-month imprisonment terms.

In addition to the prison sentence, Bansal and his company have been ordered to pay $844,765 in restitution to the District of Columbia government, U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen said in a statement.

Virginia-resident Bansal and his company AITC had plead guilty on April 27, 2010 to bribing public officials.

During his guilty plea, Bansal admitted that between September 2005 and March 2009 he and his company paid more than $700,000 in bribes to Yusuf Acar and Farrukh Awan, then employees of the District of Columbia Office of the Chief Technology Officer.

Acar and Awan previously plead guilty to federal charges and are scheduled to be sentenced on August 12, 2010.

A recent survey had put Delhi on top of the most livable cities in India, courtesy its infrastructure, greenery and development. Popular techie destinations like Chennai, Mumbai and Pune too made it to the top ten of the list.

However, India's Silicon Valley failed to secure a place in top slot. But what about most favorable cities for techies? Though the jury is still not out on that, what we have for you is the Worst Cities for IT pros globally. The list was recently released by CIO.

Here's a look at the worst cities for IT pros.

1 - Linfen, China - Situated along the banks of Fen River, Linfen in China tops the list of worst cities for IT pros.

The city also tops the Times' list of most polluted cities in the world with more than 3,000,000 people potentially affected due to automobile and industrial emissions. The city also figures among the world's ten dirtiest cities.

According to reports, Linfen residents are at high risk of skin diseases and lung cancer. With high levels of sulfur dioxide in the air, the city pays the price of China's high dependence on coal. China sources 70% of its energy requirements from coal.

2 - Mexico City, Mexico - At No 2 on the worst cities list is Mexico's capital Mexico City. With an estimated population of 8.84 million as of 2009, the city is most densely populated in the country.

Also the largest city in Mexico, Mexico City is plagued by issues like high-level of pollution, noise and violence. Organized crime, drug abuse and alcoholism are some of the other factors that earn the city a place among the worst destinations for IT pros.

3 - McMurdo Station, Antarctica - American Antarctic research center, McMurdo Station, located on the southern tip of Ross Island in Antarctica is at No. 3 on the worst cities list.

The largest community in Antarctica, McMurdo Station's summer population reaches 1,000 while the winter population swells to about 250. Though the station needs IT support, software training and a 24x7 help desk, but the freezing temperature is the biggest deterrent for IT pros.

4 – Beijing, China - The capital city of China, Beijing, is at No. 4 on the worst cities for IT pros list.

China's second largest city, after Shanghai, Beijing figures among cities with worst traffic congestion globally. With over 17 million populations, the city faces problem of high pollution, smog and degradation of natural resources.

The report also cites recent incident of Google threatening to pull out of China due to censorship and allegations of government hacking into systems of IT companies as issues.

5 - Jakarta, Indonesia - The capital city of Indonesia Jakarta ranks at No. 5 on the worst cities for IT pros. The report quotes research from ORC Worldwide (a global human resources firm) that ranks Jakarta as the No. 2 riskiest place for workers.

According to Businessweek.com, other issues that put Jakarta among worst cities are pollution, disease and sanitation, lack of medical facilities, political violence and repression and crime.

The ORC report quotes, "The threat of violence, from Islamic extremists in particular, is a serious drawback to living here."

6 - Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - Next worst city for IT pros is the capital city of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh that ranks at No. 6.

According to a survey by ORC Worldwide and Business Week, Riyadh faces problem of political violence and repression, political and social environment.

The report says, "The possibility of a terrorist attack is an ongoing threat, while wide-ranging restrictions on dress, movement, conduct, food, alcohol, travel and communications limit expatriate life."

7 – Mumbai, India - India's financial capital Mumbai too figures among the worst cities for techies.

Ranked as the seventh worst city for IT pros, Mumbai gets this dubious distinction for its high rate of pollution, disease & sanitation, infrastructure, political violence, climate and medical facilities.

According to Businessweek.com, other issues that makes Mumbai part of the list is worst slums, traffic jams and security issues.

8 - Nairobi, Kenya - Next worst city for IT pros is the capital city of Kenya, Nairobi which ranks at No 8.

The city's share of problems include: Crime, infrastructure, disease & sanitation, political violence & repression, and social environment.

According to ORC Worldwide research, "Violent crime is a significant drawback and shortages of water and electricity can be a challenge in Nairobi."

9 - Afghanistan - At No. 9 on the list is Afghanistan. According to the report, any city in Afghanistan is not an ideal destination for techies to work.

US 'confident' that Pak will not use weapons against India

The US, which is offering a range of sophisticated weapons to Pakistan to fight terrorists, is confident that these will not be used against India "in any way" and promised to ensure that the armaments are not misused through end-use monitoring.

"They are not to be used against India in any way," Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia and Central Asian Affairs Robert Blake has said.

"This is a question I often receive, and I'd like to reassure all of our friends in India that whatever military assistance we are providing to Pakistan is to be used in its fight against terrorism - particularly in its border areas with Afghanistan," Blake said yesterday during a webchat ahead of the US-India Strategic Dialogue here.

He acknowledged that the Obama Administration was providing a range of counterterrorism platforms and counterinsurgency platforms to Pakistan.

"And these are things, really, that are going to be used against the militants who are based in these border areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan. They are not to be used against India in any way," he asserted.

"So, again, I'd like to reassure all of our participants in this dialogue that that is the purpose for which we are transferring arms to Pakistan.

He also said that the US will also undertake "through" end-use monitoring so that whatever weapons are transferred to Pakistan are used for the purposes for which they were sold.

There have been reports that the US may supply sophisticated laser-guided bomb kits, 12 surveillance drones and 18 F-16 fighters to enhance Pakistan military's capability to strike at Taliban and al-Qaeda targets located in remote tribal areas of Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

He also said that the overall character of US assistance programme to Pakistan was changing very rapidly and pointed out that through the Kerry-Lugar legislation, Washington was providing USD 1.5 billion a year in economic assistance to Pakistan to help that country to meet its economic and energy challenges of its fast-growing population.

"So, that's really where I would put the focus. Not so much on the military side," Blake said.

He also said that the US was "very encouraged" that the Pakistani army has redeployed troops away from the Indian border.

"We do not see India as a threat to Pakistan and so we would encourage that process to continue. And that's why we attached such great importance to improved relations between India and Pakistan," he said, adding that Washington will continue to work hard on and will continue to remain a very high priority.

An Indian now owns the East India Company

London: With just around a month to go for the re-launch of the East India Company - the world\'s first multinational whose forces once ruled much of the globe - its new Indian owner says he is overwhelmed by \"a huge feeling of redemption\".

It\'s been a long, emotional and personal journey for Sanjiv Mehta, a Mumbai-born entrepreneur who completed the process of buying the East India Company (EIC) in 2005 from the \"30 or 40\" people who owned it.

Acutely aware that he owned a piece of history - at its height the company generated half of world trade and employed a third of the British workforce - Mehta, now the sole owner, dived into the company's rich and ruthless past in order to give it a new direction for the future.

With a $15-million investment and inputs from a range of experts - from designers and brand researchers to historians - Mehta is today poised to open the first East India Company store in London's upmarket Mayfair neighbourhood in March.

And then there is the inevitable - and daunting - task of launching in India, a country whose resources, army, trade and politics the company had controlled for some 200 years.

It's a task that Mehta has not taken lightly, he told IANS in an interview. "Put yourself in my shoes for a moment: On a rational plane, when I bought the company I saw gold at the end of the rainbow.

"But, at an emotional level as an Indian, when you think with your heart as I do, I had this huge feeling of redemption - this indescribable feeling of owning a company that once owned us."

The formal start of the East India Company is usually dated back to 1600 when Britain's Queen Elizabeth I granted a group of merchants a charter under the name 'The Company of Merchants of London Trading into the East Indies.'

With its own Elizabethan coat of arms - now owned by Mehta - the company was made responsible for bringing tea, coffee and luxury goods to the West and trading in spices across the globe.

By 1757 the company had become a powerful arm of British imperial might, with its own army, navy, shipping fleets and currency, and control over key trading posts in India - where it was known variously as Company Bahadur and John Company. In 1874, the British government nationalised the company, opportunistically blaming the 1857 uprising on its excesses. But the East India Company army, brought under the command of the Crown, retained its all-powerful presence in India.

"When I took over the company, my objective was to understand its history. I took a sabbatical from all other business and this became the single purpose in my life," said Mehta.

He travelled around the world, visiting former EIC trading posts and museums, reading up records and meeting people "who understood the business of that time".

"There was a huge sense of responsibility - I didn't create this brand, but I wanted to be as pioneering as the merchants who created it."

"The Elizabethan coat of arms stands for trust and reassurance, but we are not repeating history. It took me four years to do the brand positioning and put up the milestones."

US sees 50 bank collapses in 2010; eight fold up in one day

Pushing the total count of American bank failures to 50 so far this year, eight entities collapsed in a single day last week.
Indicating that the banking system continues to remain shaky, on an average, 12 banks are biting the dust every month in 2010. The US authorities shut down eight entities on April 16 and the numbers are expected to climb before the employment situation stabilises. Even though, the economy is growing at over five per cent, the jobless rate is still high at over nine per cent. With increased unemployment, small and medium banks are witnessing more defaults.

The latest entities to go belly up include Tamalpais Bank, City Bank, Butler Bank, AmericanFirst Bank, Lakeside Community Bank, First Federal Bank of North Florida, Riverside National Bank of Florida and Innovative Bank.

According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), which insures deposits at over 8,000 banks, these failures would cost the agency as much as $984.7 million. A whopping 19 banks had gone belly up last month, while seven entities were closed down in February. The authorities shut down 15 banks in January. The US has seen 204 bank collapses since the bankruptcy of Wall Street major Lehman Brothers in September 2008, that worsened the financial crisis.

Wipro employee commits $4 Million fraud

Bangalore: IT major Wipro has tightened internal control in the finance division after it was noticed that one of its employees embezzled crores of rupees in the last three years. The employee, who was working in the 'controllership' division within the finance department in the last three years, stole a password and transferred funds from Wipro's account at a bank, reports M.V. Ramsurya and Pankaj Mishra of Economic Times.
Suresh C Senapaty, Wipro's CFO has also confirmed the incident. "This has been a case of embezzlement, which we discovered in December, and it's very unfortunate that this person succumbed to this," he said. According to him, the company has carried out an investigation and is undertaking actions with respect to stricter adherence to processes.

Following this, Wipro has disbanded the controllership unit. Wipro officials have succeeded in recovering about half the money, but will still face a loss of about $2 million. The CFO said the incident did not involve more than one Wipro employee. "Our investigations have revealed that only this employee was involved, and nobody else in the team had any clue," Senapaty said.

Apart from setting up an internal investigation team, Wipro has also taken help from external auditors and investigation experts who will vet its processes and certify the soundness of its controls. Wipro has always taken pride in the sound work ethics of its employees and in the strictness of its controls. "We have to be more alert in monitoring, and we need to tighten the processes for ensuring an early warning system and make it tougher," Senapaty said.

Now, Wipro plans to make it compulsory for its employees to sign an undertaking about sharing of passwords and any unauthorized transactions. The company is also planning to frequently rotate its employees, who are working in sensitive functions within the finance department. Currently, employees in such functions spend around three years before a transfer.

Mumbai: In a crackdown against Shiv Sena, over 1000 of its activists have been detained ahead of the release of Shah Rukh Khan starrer My Name Is Khan after the party stepped up its protest against the film over the actor's remarks favouring inclusion of Pakistani cricketers in IPL.
"In the last 24 hours, a total of 1,023 Sainiks have been arrested. While 955 were picked up under the preventive action, the rest were put behind bars for different cases, including for protesting outside the theatre, vandalising screens among others," police said.

Tight security has been provided to 63 theatres across the city where the movie is scheduled to be released on February 12, they said.

Guidelines have also been issued to all police stations by the city police chief regarding security arrangements.

The Sena has renewed its threat not to allow the release of My Name Is Khan unless the Bollywood star retracts his statement favouring inclusion of Pakistani players in IPL-3.

"We will not allow the movie to be released. Shah Rukh should first apologise to Balasaheb (Thackeray) and then only we can talk with him," Sena leader Manohar Joshi said yesterday.

In wake of the Sena intensifying protests against Khan, leaves of the city policemen have been cancelled to ensure their full presence.

To further strengthen security, personnel from State Reserve Police Force and home guards will be deployed at the 63 theatres that will screen the film here.

Karan Johar, director and co-producer of the film, yesterday met police commissioner D Sivanandhan to discuss security issues ahead of the movie's release.

Bangalore: Trust Shah Rukh Khan to turn an intellectual event like a business and management quiz programme into a mega entertainment show. That's exactly what played out at the Koramangala indoor stadium in Bangalore on Monday, where Bollywood star Khan played the quizmaster to the brightest B-school brains at the Indian Institute of Planning and Management's Dare '10 grand finale.
Diehard fans of SRK were more in number, than management enthusiasts.

The programme started two hours late, but the tired audience's deafening screams when Khan came on stage was enough to prove that the king, indeed, rules.

When he said "Namaskaragalu Bengaluru", a deafening roar filled the stadium. Then he said "I love you Ka... Ka... Ka... Karnataka" and the audience went crazy. When he said the famous dialogue from his movie Baazigar — "Harkar jeetnewale ko Bengaluru wale kehte hain" (Those who lose the game and yet, win, they are called Bangaloreans)— the audience stood up and applauded.

The quiz show was interspersed with Khan tricks, which are now associated with most of his live stage shows. These included picking on random fans from the audience and inviting them on stage for some fun banter, speaking a smattering of Kannada — Naanu chennagideeni, hegiddeera? (I am doing fine, how are you?); doing a quick jig to short pieces of songs from his movies and, giving nicknames to the participants.

One participant even asked Khan to give him a kiss on his cheek, a demand apparently made by his wife back home in England. Khan, in his trademark style, obliged with a charming smile and kissed him more than once.

There was, as with all of Khan's shows, mad hysteria, tears of joy and the audience's endless declarations of love for the Badshah. The stadium echoed to the sounds of "I love you Shah Rukh", to which the actor humbly and unfailingly replied each time: "I love you too, darling".

The crowd just couldn't have enough of him. In keeping with the run-up to the release of his movie, My Name is Khan, there was also a quiz round named after the movie which had questions about the star.

Dare '10 was organised by the management school.

This was the grand finale of one of the most prestigious international B-school quizzes in which more than a 100 B-school teams participated.

The six teams which participated in Monday's finals were IMT Ghaziabad, Kenan-Flagler, ITM Mumbai, Booth School of Business, IMNU and IPE, Hyderabad.

Who sells the largest number of cameras in India?

Your guess is likely to be Sony, Canon or Nikon. Answer is none of the above. The winner is Nokia whose main line of business in India is not cameras but cell phones.

Reason being cameras bundled with cell phones are outselling stand alone cameras. Now, what prevents the cell phone from replacing the camera outright? Nothing at all. One can only hope the Sony and Canon are taking note.

Try this. Who is the biggest in music business in India? You think it is HMV Sa-Re-Ga-Ma? Sorry. The answer is Airtel. By selling caller tunes (that play for 30 seconds) Airtel makes more than what music companies make by selling music albums (that run for hours).

Incidentally Airtel is not in music business. It is the mobile service provider with the largest subscriber base in India. That sort of competitor is difficult to detect, even more difficult to beat (by the time you have identified him he has already gone past you). But if you imagine that Nokia and Bharti (Airtel's parent) are breathing easy you can't be farther from truth.

Nokia confessed that they all but missed the smart phone bus. They admit that Apple's Iphone and Google's Android can make life difficult in future. But you never thought Google was a mobile company, did you? If these illustrations mean anything, there is a bigger game unfolding. It is not so much about mobile or music or camera or emails?

The "Mahabharata" (the great Indian epic battle) is about "what is tomorrow's personal digital device"? Will it be a souped up mobile or a palmtop with a telephone? All these are little wars that add up to that big battle. Hiding behind all these wars is a gem of a question – "who is my competitor?"

Once in a while, to intrigue my students I toss a question at them. It says "What Apple did to Sony, Sony did to Kodak, explain?" The smart ones get the answer almost immediately. Sony defined its market as audio (music from the walkman). They never expected an IT company like Apple to encroach into their audio domain. Come to think of it, is it really surprising? Apple as a computer maker has both audio and video capabilities. So what made Sony think he won't compete on pure audio? "Elementary Watson". So also Kodak defined its business as film cameras, Sony defines its businesses as "digital."

In digital camera the two markets perfectly meshed. Kodak was torn between going digital and sacrificing money on camera film or staying with films and getting left behind in digital technology. Left undecided it lost in both. It had to. It did not ask the question "who is my competitor for tomorrow?" The same was true for IBM whose mainframe revenue prevented it from seeing the PC. The same was true of Bill Gates who declared "internet is a fad!" and then turned around to bundle the browser with windows to bury Netscape. The point is not who is today's competitor. Today's competitor is obvious. Tomorrow's is not.

In 2008, who was the toughest competitor to British Airways in India? Singapore airlines? Better still, Indian airlines? Maybe, but there are better answers. There are competitors that can hurt all these airlines and others not mentioned. The answer is videoconferencing and tele presence services of HP and Cisco. Travel dropped due to recession. Senior IT executives in India and abroad were compelled by their head quarters to use videoconferencing to shrink travel budget. So much so, that the mad scramble for American visas from Indian techies was nowhere in sight in 2008. (India has a quota of something like 65,000 visas to the U.S. They were going a-begging. Blame it on recession!). So far so good. But to think that the airlines will be back in business post recession is something I would not bet on. In short term yes. In long term a resounding no. Remember, if there is one place where Newton's law of gravity is applicable besides physics it is in electronic hardware. Between 1977 and 1991 the prices of the now dead VCR (parent of Blue-Ray disc player) crashed to one-third of its original level in India. PC's price dropped from hundreds of thousands of rupees to tens of thousands. If this trend repeats then tele presence prices will also crash. Imagine the fate of airlines then. As it is not many are making money. Then it will surely be RIP!

India has two passions. Film and cricket. The two markets were distinctly different. So were the icons. The cricket gods were Sachin and Sehwag. The filmi gods were the Khans (Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and the other Khans who followed suit). That was, when cricket was fundamentally test cricket or at best 50 over cricket. Then came IPL and the two markets collapsed into one. IPL brought cricket down to 20 overs. Suddenly an IPL match was reduced to the length of a 3 hour movie. Cricket became film's competitor. On the eve of IPL matches movie halls ran empty. Desperate multiplex owners requisitioned the rights for screening IPL matches at movie halls to hang on to the audience. If IPL were to become the mainstay of cricket, as it is likely to be, films have to sequence their releases so as not clash with IPL matches. As far as the audience is concerned both are what in India are called 3 hour "tamasha" (entertainment) . Cricket season might push films out of the market.

Look at the products that vanished from India in the last 20 years. When did you last see a black and white movie? When did you last use a fountain pen? When did you last type on a typewriter? The answer for all the above is "I don't remember!" For some time there was a mild substitute for the typewriter called electronic typewriter that had limited memory. Then came the computer and mowed them all. Today most technologically challenged guys like me use the computer as an upgraded typewriter. Typewriters per se are nowhere to be seen.

One last illustration. 20 years back what were Indians using to wake them up in the morning? The answer is "alarm clock." The alarm clock was a monster made of mechanical springs. It had to be physically keyed every day to keep it running. It made so much noise by way of alarm, that it woke you up and the rest of the colony. Then came quartz clocks which were sleeker. They were much gentler though still quaintly called "alarms." What do we use today for waking up in the morning? Cell phone! An entire industry of clocks disappeared without warning thanks to cell phones. Big watch companies like Titan were the losers. You never know in which bush your competitor is hiding!

On a lighter vein, who are the competitors for authors? Joke spewing machines? (Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple, himself a Pole, tagged a Polish joke telling machine to a telephone much to the mirth of Silicon Valley). Or will the competition be story telling robots? Future is scary! The boss of an IT company once said something interesting about the animal called competition. He said "Have breakfast …or…. be breakfast"! That sums it up rather neatly.

SRK to Sena: Should I retract that I'm an Indian?

After Shah Rukh Khan refused to apologize for his comments on Pakistani cricketers, Uddhav Thackeray has told NDTV "If SRK doesn't retract his statements, I cannot guarantee anything."

Thackeray's Shiv Sena has sent letters to cinema-owners in Mumbai, ordering them to remove posters of Shah Rukh's forthcoming release, My Name is Khan. Cinemas have also been warned not to screen the Karan Johar-directed film, scheduled for release on Friday, February 12. (Read & Watch: Threatened by Sena, theatres drop SRK posters)

At a press conference in London on Wednesday, Shah Rukh said, "I think what I said is true of any person from any nation from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, America, England. That's how I think we've all been brought up. You say 'ok, my country is nice, I'm very proud of it, I'm very proud to have been born there and I wish a lot of people come to my country and participate in the goodness of my country.' If that is wrong then I think I need to relook (sic) at what my children are studying right now. I need to even ask people who think the statement is wrong 'do they have an issue with the schools their children are going to?' Because that's what they are being taught also. It's not a stand or a statement against anyone. It's actually, sort of what I individually feel and normally when a film is releasing - and I won't comment on this on a larger scale, because, it's nice for a Hindi film hero who is thought of as an icon to say this, but it scares me to say anything, because our stakes are very high. I'm really sorry. I would like to apologize to Karan Johar (the director), I apologize to Kajol and I'm immensely sorry to all our business partners that because of what I say or what I believe in the film and the work is going to be affected." The controversy began when SRK, in an interview to NDTV's Prannoy Roy, said that he thinks Pakistani players should participate in the Indian Premiere League (IPL). At the auction for players for the next season of the IPL, 11 Pakistani cricketers were up for sale, but no bids were placed for them.

The Shiv Sena has since attacked Shah Rukh on a near-daily basis. On Thursday, Uddhav Thackeray told NDTV, "I am not attacking Shah Rukh because he is a Muslim...where was the need for him to make those comments?" (Watch: After Sena threat, tight security at SRK's house)

The Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has said that strict action will be taken against anyone who tries to disrupt screenings of My Name is Khan. The government has also said it will provide security to theatres screening the film. The lady runs to the hotel, and pays off her debt with the 100 Euro note to the hotel proprietor to pay for the rooms that she rented. The hotel proprietor then lays the 100 Euro note back on the counter so that the rich tourist will not suspect anything. At that moment, the rich tourist comes down after inspecting the rooms and takes his 100 Euro note, after saying that he did not like any of the rooms, and leaves town.

As many as 96,942 children tested positive for AIDS during the last three years in India, Minister of State for Health Dinesh Trivedi said Tuesday.

The highest was in Andhra Pradesh with 22,559 children testing positive for the disease followed by 21,835 in Maharashtra and 15,082 in Tamil Nadu.

Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha, Trivedi said: "The government has taken several steps to protect children from HIV infection.

"Identification, counseling and prophylactic treatment to HIV positive pregnant women and new born babies, diagnosis of HIV positive children and spreading public awareness."

The study was conducted by researchers from LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Public Health, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), Harvard School of Public Health, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Harvard Medical School.

The research team studied a group of 13,475 women from the Nurses' Health Study II. During 10 years of follow-up, 860 incident GDM cases were identified.

After adjustment for known risk factors for GDM including age, family history of diabetes, parity, physical activity, smoking status, sugar-sweetened beverage intake, alcohol intake, pre-pregnancy BMI, and Western dietary pattern, intake of sugar-sweetened cola was positively associated with the risk of GDM.

No significant association was found for other sugar-sweetened beverages or diet beverages.

"Compared with women who consumed less than 1 serving per month, those who consumed more than 5 servings per week of sugar-sweetened cola had a 22 percent greater GDM risk," said Liwei Chen, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Public Health, and the lead author of the paper.

TRAI fixes Rs 19 as portability fee to change mobile operators (Retaining the same mobile number)

Telecom regulator TRAI today fixed at Rs 19 the reference rate for portability fee--charged from users for changing operator while retaining the number. The per port transaction charge will be Rs 19 and the subscriber will not be charged more than that. However, operators are free to levy any amount less than or equal to this charge, TRAI said in a statement today.
Government has fixed the deadline of December 31, 2009, by which operators should ready their networks for porting of numbers in metros.
Accordingly the service is likely to be available in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, it said. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had issued guidelines for for its implementation in the country in August last year.

Accessing ATMs of any bank closes from Oct.15

The free access to automated teller machines (ATMs) of any bank will be closed from October 15 as the third-party ATM usage would carry a cap on the withdrawal amount and the number of transactions each month. From October 15, a customer can take out a maximum of Rs.10,000 per withdrawal from ATMs not owned by the bank in which the customer has an account, and the number of such transactions would be limited to five a month.

In August, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had asked banks to impose the restrictions on third-party ATM usage from mid-October. The step followed recommendations by Indian Banks' Association (IBA), an industry lobby. IBA had submitted its recommendations to the central bank last July citing financial burden on banks due to a large number of third party usage and small-ticket withdrawals, resulting in high interchange expenses for banks.

Going by the IBA guidelines, a savings account holder may get five free third-party transactions a month and could be charged from sixth onwards. However, current account holders might not get any free third-party usage.

In an act of corporate kindness, the Healthcare Global Hospital in Bangalore now offers cancer treatment on equated monthly installment (EMI) and without interest, too. CNBC-TV18's Deepa Balakrishanan reports.

"We will not be able to afford this treatment. It was very difficult to take that decision, but at some point we had to. This treatment was costing us a bomb," says businessman Ashish Mehta.

Ever since his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, Mehta hasn't stopped worrying. At first, it was about getting the right treatment; next about where to go for the money. That's when he met Prashant, a medico social worker at the Healthcare Global hospital, who told him that his mother's health too can come in easy monthly installments over the next two years, after all the chemotherapy sessions. That too, interest-free.

"You don't' know how much to go, where to draw a line, how long you can go for the treatment, then we decided this was a blessing in disguise to pay in small installments," Mehta says.

The hospital boasts of some state-of-the-art medical facilities. But treatment using them could cost anything from Rs 2 to 5 lakh. HCG launched the EMI scheme as too many patients were finding the high cost as painful as the treatment.

Says Dr BS Ajai Kumar, Chairman of the HCG Bangalore Institute of Oncology, "I learnt it through the micro-credit system, I've done in Mysore near gunglupet and I have studied the micro credit model. Similarly, I do believe we trust in people and they keep up. So far, you know a small pilot project we have done, it has worked out very well. So, we want to expand it all over the country."

About 20 patients have taken up the EMI scheme and no one has defaulted yet.

It won't exactly wipe away all your worries, but it'll certainly help cope better with expensive and painful treatment. And just as some colleges believe that you shouldn't turn away a student for want of funds, here's a hospital chain that believes you shouldn't turn away a patient just for lack of money.

Jet pilots behaving like 'terrorists' : Chairman

Jet Airways Chairman Naresh Goyal on Wednesday warned of stern action against his pilots if they behave like "terrorists" and continue to report sick "in violation of a Bombay High Court order".

"They are behaving like terrorists. They cannot hold the country, passengers and the airline hostage," Goyal said, as the carrier was forced to cancel some 170 flights for the second day running. "I am open to meeting and talking to the pilots. I will be more than happy to meet them. But they cannot harass the passengers," he said.

"We won't tolerate such blackmail. The livelihood of more than 30,000 employees of Jet Airways is at stake," the airline chief said after another round of meetings with top government officials in New Delhi. "This is pure and simple contempt of court," he added, referring to the Bombay High Court order on Tuesday evening, restraining the pilots from any form of strike in the country's largest private airline.

The operations of Jet Airways were disrupted for the second straight day on Wednesday because of the mass "sick leave" by pilots, resulting in some 170 flights being cancelled.
The pilots are demanding the reinstatement of two of their colleagues who were sacked last month, which they say was done mainly because of their role in the formation of a separate union. Late on Tuesday, three more pilots of the carrier were sacked, followed by another five added to the list on Wednesday morning. This led to the pilots hardening their stand.

Capt Girish Kaushik, the president of the newly-formed National Aviators' Guild, said he was hoping to meet the management of Jet Airways on Wednesday to resolve the matter amicably. "I am willing to meet the management," Kaushik said, before his talks with the officials of the ministry and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

According to Jet Airways chairman, while no estimate was available on the actual monetary loss because of the agitation, the carrier had lost out heavily in terms of the inconvenience caused to passengers. "We had bookings from more than 14,000 domestic passengers and 9,500 international passengers," he said, seeking to project the losses in terms of how many passengers the airline was unable to fly.

decided to get married. There was only one

little thing bothering me...It was her beautiful

younger sister.

My prospective sister-in-law was twenty-two, wore very

tight miniskirts, and generally was bra-less. She

would regularly bend down when she was near

me, and I always got more than a nice view. It had to

be deliberate. Because she never did it when she was

near anyone else.

One day her 'little' sister called and asked me to

come over to check the wedding invitations. She was

alone when I arrived, and she whispered to me that she

had feelings and desires for me that she couldn't

overcome. She told me that she wanted me just once

before I got married and committed my life to her sister.

Well, I was in total shock, and couldn't say a word.

She said, 'I'm going upstairs to my bedroom, and if

you want one last wild fling, just come up and get me.'

I was stunned and frozen in shock as I watched her go

up the stairs. I stood there for a moment, then turned

and made a beeline straight to the front door. I

Andhra Pradesh CM - YSR dead in chopper crash: PMO sources

Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy has died in an air crash, the Prime Minister's Office said on Thursday.

The bodies of 60-year-old Reddy, who led his Congress party to a spectacular second consecutive victory in the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, and his Special Secretary P Subramanyam, chief security officer A S C Wesley, pilot Group Captain S K Bhatia and co-pilot M S Reddy were found on Rudrakonda Hill, 40 nautical miles east of here, besides the mangled remains of the helicopter.

There was no official confirmation of the deaths, but highly placed Congress sources in Delhi said that the bodies have been found. An official statement is expected shortly.

A scheduled meeting of the Union Cabinet was cancelled following the tragedy.

The helicopter carrying YSR Reddy, two of his staff and two pilots went missing in pouring rain Wednesday morning over the Naxal and tiger-infested Nalamalla forests.

Nearly 24 hours after YSR's chopper went missing; it was located atop Serai Salem hill, at a distance 40 nautical miles (70 kms) east of Kurnool.

The CM left Hyderabad on a six-seater Bell chopper at 8.35am for Chittoor accompanied by his secretary and chief security officer. After 9.27am, radio contact was lost with the helicopter.

Soon after the chopper lost contact, multiple agencies of the state launched a massive hunt for possible wreckage in the desolate terrain. By evening, it expanded into the country's biggest-ever search operation with satellites in the sky joining remote sensing aircraft, fighter jets, unmanned aerial vehicles, troops on the ground and even barefoot deer-hunting tribal's with bows and arrows.

Telecom major Tata Indicom on Tuesday launched a 'pay per call' plan for its pre-paid subscribers, in which subscribers will have to pay fixed charge on a per-call basis both for local and STD usage, regardless of the call duration.

"Our pre-paid subscribers will pay a fixed charge of Re 1 per local call and Rs 3 for STD calls for unlimited duration, said MD of Tata Teleservices Anil Sardana while launching the new tariff system. Tata Indicom operates CDMA-based mobile services in the country and has a customer base of 40 million subscribers.

The new tariff system, which will intensify the rate war, is valid on all calls made by Tata Indicom subscribers to "any mobile phone or landline connection on any network", said a statement issued by Tata. The new offer has also cut SMS charges to 50 paise per SMS for both local and national messages.

The service is available to all new Tata Indicom connections and existing customers can adopt the offer with a one-time recharge of Rs 96. The statement said, all subscribers who opt for it will be charged a daily fee of Re 1 to avail the option.

However, the new tariff will not be available to the post paid subscribers. The company may introduce it for the post paid customers also after assessing its success among the pre-paid customers.

COO of NCR region of Tata Teleservices Vineet Bhatia said, "The product is the result of research and studies to understand consumer trends and usage patterns." He added customers who opt for this plan will no longer have to worry about the cost every minute of a call. Anil Ambani doles out cash - In Puri,

Industrialist Anil Ambani exhibited his generosity during a visit to Puri on Sunday. Holding wads of Rs 1,000 notes, Anil donated not less than Rs 40,000 among a handful of roadside coconut vendors and poor passers-by on Puri-Bhubaneswar National Highway near Chandanpur in Puri district.

Anil's cavalcade, comprising eight cars, halted with a screech near the coconut vendors on the busy highway around 3.15 pm. Anil, wearing a white kurta-pyjama, walked up to the vendors and bought coconuts for himself and those in his cavalcade. He was joined by his mother Kokilaben, sister Dipti D Salgaocar and brother-in-law Dattaraj Salgaocar.

Anil then distributed food packets and other gifts among coconut vendors. The chairman of Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group did not stop there. Money was distributed like 'prasad' among fruit sellers and poor villagers, who thronged the place.

"I sold 70 coconuts to Anil Ambani and his people. He himself had two. I got a Rs 1,000 note, some sweets and a food packet from him," said a coconut vendor, Sagar Bhoi.

Anil did not frustrate other vendors. He walked down to other fruit sellers and doled out money and freebies. "I saw him hand Rs 1,000 notes to at least 40 people. Some security guards, who accompanied Anil, were also benefited as Anil distributed notes to them as well," another vendor Nanda Behera said.

"I had heard of Anil Ambani. I was overjoyed to get him as my customer today. He was very generous and soft-spoken," Bhoi said.

"Anil was driving the car and suddenly stopped on the road. We were shocked at first. Then he got us coconuts and donated money to the poor coconut vendors," one member of the cavalcade said.

Earlier, Anil visited the Jagannath temple and spent at least two hours meditating in the Mahalaxmi sub-shrine located inside the 12th century shrine precinct. His mother accompanied him to the temple for darshan of the presiding deities. Anil's visit to Puri came a fortnight after he undertook a pilgrimage to temples in south India. From Puri he headed further east to Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu.

India third on global female smoking list

Indian women are among the worst in the world when it comes to smoking. According to the latest Tobacco Atlas, the country ranks third in the top 20 female smoking populations across the globe. Only the US with 2.3 crore female smokers and China with 1.3 crore women smokers are worse off than India in this chart. However, as far as percentage of women smoking is concerned, it is below 20% for India. Among India's immediate neighbours, only Pakistan figures in this infamous list, but right at the bottom at 20th with around 30 lakh female smokers. Published by the American Cancer Society and World Lung Foundation, the Atlas makes another serious observation -- female smokers in India die an average eight years earlier than their non-smoking peers.

According to the Atlas, about 250 million women in the world are daily smokers -- 22% being from high resource countries and 9% from low and middle resource countries. Realizing the potential of this growing market, the Atlas said the tobacco industry has been marketing cigarettes to women using seductive but false images of vitality, emancipation, slimness, sophistication and sexual allure. Reacting to the report, Dr P C Gupta, director of Healis Sekhsaria Institute of Public Health, told TOI that this finding had very serious implications for India. "Even though the percentage prevalence of women smoking in India isn't that high, the number is huge. In addition to all the harm that tobacco causes to men, women are additionally exposed in a special way because of their reproductive function."

Dr Gupta added that tobacco consumption reduced birth weight of the foetus, decreased their gestational age leading to premature babies, increased the risk of still births and heightened chances of anaemia among adult pregnant women. "The government isn't focusing on anti-tobacco campaign that specially targets women. Smoking is definitely increasing in young college going women showing that the tobacco industry is targeting them very strongly," Dr Gupta added. The Atlas said tobacco killed some six million people each year -- more than a third of whom will die from cancer -- and drained $500 billion annually from global economies.

As 25% of smokers die and many more become ill during their most productive years, income loss devastates families and communities. In 2010, 72% of those who die from tobacco related illnesses would be in low- and middle-income countries. By 2030, 83% of these deaths will occur in low and middle-income countries. Unveiled at the Global Cancer Summit on Wednesday, the Atlas said 2.1 million cancer deaths per year will be attributable to tobacco by 2015. "The Atlas is crucial to helping advocates in every nation get the knowledge they need to combat the most preventable global health epidemic," said John R Seffrin, CEO of American Cancer Society.

4G threatens to spoil Govt's 3G party

As India dithers over a policy on 3G mobile telephony, US' Motorola wants to test the next level (4G) that could pour cold water on

the government's plan to raise Rs 35,000 crore from selling radio frequency for the existing version.
Motorola, which has tested the new next generation technology, called Long-Term Evolution (LTE), is all set to start trial services of 4G that can offer 70 MB per second (Mbps) download speeds on a mobile phone by the end of this year.
The company is likely to approach the Department of Telecom (DoT) for trial spectrum, Subhendu Mohanty, a senior executive with Networks Mobility Business, Motorola India, said.
This development may, however, prompt operators planning to launch 3G telephony to wait and watch, thus spoiling the government's plan to mop up a whopping Rs 35,000 crore from auction of 3G spectrum.

Asked whether Motorola is talking to operators, Mohanty said: "We would like to have trial with the players but the technology can also be tested on our own systems."
In fact, the DoT is also understood to have prepared a concept paper on the 4G and the issue may be discussed at length in the days to come. Besides Motorola, other telecom vendors are also in the process of trials, industry sources said.

Oriya daily wagers win reality show - India Got Talent

BHUBANESWAR: The all-conquering members of the Oriya dance troupe 'Prince' -- comprising daily wage earners -- may now justly expect a reception fit for kings. Since the moment Bollywood star Rani Mukherjee announced that the dancers from far-flung Ganjam district in Orissa were the winners of the TV reality show, "India's Got Talent", everybody and his brother in the state is doing a jig.

And with good reason. The dancers are not just starry-eyed participants in a hotly contested programme where the ultimate prize was Rs 50 lakh and a Maruti Ritz. Nearly every member of the group of 24 has surmounted individual odds -- two of them have overcome polio -- and shown their unbeatable spirit.

Coming from different parts of Ganjam, the dancers displayed perfect symmetry of determination and talent to outperform groups from across India -- including an improbable 10 in the grand finale. Their winning submission was a performance based on 'Dashavatar' -- the 10 avataras of Lord Vishnu.

"We'd hoped to win. Now that we have achieved our mission, we're thrilled!" exclaimed troupe leader Krishna Mohan Reddy (26) on phone from Mumbai. The self-taught dancer-choreographer told TOI, "The prize money has come as a blessing as most of us were in dire need of it. Some needed to build houses, others have sisters to get married."

Krishna -- from a nondescript village Ambapua on the outskirts of Berhampur, Ganjam -- said he now plans to set up a dance academy. "We'll all contribute part of our prize money for the institute," he said.

The Berhampur-based troupe -- their story sounds a bit like the rags-to-riches tale of Jamal Malik in 'Slumdog Millionaire' -- has become a statewide obsession ever since its members startled everybody with their fleet-footed show. Such was "Prince's" impact that CM Naveen Patnaik declared his vote for the group. "Their performance has been magical and they have made Orissa proud," he said after congratulating Krishna and his boys.

'Prince' was formed four years ago. Two of its members, Padmanabha Sahu (24) and Telu Tarini (13), suffer from polio. Most dancers are wage earners in their teens or 20s. They practised in Ambapua and on Gopalpur beach, and have now left their footprints on the sands of time.

Four friends, who hadn't seen each other in 30 years, reunited at a party. After several drinks, one of the men had to use the rest room. Those who remained talked about their kids.

The fourth man replied: 'My son is gay and makes a living dancing as a stripper at a gay nightclub.'

Mumbai : A day after Femida Panwala (33) became the first victim of the H1N1 virus in Mumbai, the civic administration said she had contracted the virus “through the air” and that the epidemic had moved to its next phase of virus spread.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said Panwala was an ‘indigenous’ case and investigations into her medical history had led them to conclude that she had contracted the disease from the environment and not due to her proximity to a patient or contact. “The virus is still the mildest strain,” said Dr Sanjay Oak, Director of Medical Education and Research, BMC.

Experts however explained that the viruses in milder strains could be more potent as they spread to more people than a deadlier strain. The deadlier strain ends with the death of the patient and does not spread further as against a milder strain which spreads within the community.

“At present, the swine flu virus is in the air. So, those of us who have a weak immune system are more likely to contract the disease,” Municipal Commissioner Jairaj Phatak said.

“In the two months that the virus has been in India, there have been an unusual number of cases in different parts of the country, in small numbers. This is the phase one of the epidemic in the country. In phase two, there is a dramatic rise in the number of cases which means that in one day diagnosis there has been a tremendous increase. This is the building up of the epidemiology curve which will rise till it reaches the phase of plateau. In the phase four, it starts decreasing,” said Professor V I Mathan, from the National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai.

A soldier stationed in Afghanistan recently received a letter from his girl friend back home. It read as follows:

The soldier, with hurt feelings, asked his fellow soldiers for any

It's an old story that we read in Class 3 but with a new ending.

A hat-seller who was passing by a forest decided to take a nap under

so he left his whole basket of hats by the side. A few hours later, he

up and realized that all his hats were gone.
He looked up and to his surprise, the tree was full of monkeys and
they had
taken all his hats.

The hat seller sits down and thinks of how he can get the hats down.
While thinking he started to scratch his head. The next moment, the
monkeys
were doing the same.
Next, he took down his own hat, the monkeys did exactly the same. An
idea
came to his mind*
He took his hat and threw it on the floor and the monkeys did that
too. So
he finally managed to get all his hats back.

Fifty years later, his grandson, Sukhwinder, also became a hat-seller

had heard this monkey story from his grandfather.

What is it?

Starting at GMT 03:14:07, Tuesday, January 19, ! 2038, It is expected
to see lots of systems around the world breaking magnificently:
satellites falling out of orbit, massive power outages (like the 2003 North American blackout), hospital life support system failures, phone system interruptions, banking errors, etc. One second after this critical second, many of these systems will have wildly inaccurate date settings, producing all kinds of unpredictable consequences. In short, many of the dire predictions for the year 2000 are much more likely to actually occur in the year 2038!
Consider the year 2000 just a dry run. In case you think we can sit on this issue for another 30 years before addressing it, consider that reports of temporal echoes of the 2038 problem are already starting to appear in future date calculations for mortgages and vital statistics!

In the first month of the year 2038 C.E. many com! Putters will encounter a date-related bug in their operating systems and/or in the applications they run. This can result in incorrect and wildly inaccurate dates being reported by the operating system and/or applications. The effect of this bug is hard to predict, because many applications are not prepared for the resulting "skip" in reported time anywhere from 1901 to a "broken record" repeat of the reported time at the second the bug occurs. Also, may make some small adjustment to the actual time the bug expresses itself. This bug to cause serious problems on many platforms, especially UNIX and Unix-
like platforms, because these systems will "run out of time".

What causes it?

Time_t is a data type used by C and C++ programs to represent dates and times internally. (Windows programmers out there might also recognize it a! s the basis for the CTime and CTimeSpan classes in
MFC.) time_t is actually just an integer, a whole number, that counts the number of seconds since January 1, 1970 at 12:00 AM Greenwich Mean Time. A time_t value of 0 would be 12:00:00 AM (exactly midnight) 1-Jan-1970, a time_t value of 1 would be 12:00:01 AM (one second after midnight) 1-Jan-1970, etc.. some example times and their exact time_t representations:

By the year 2038, the time_t representation for the current time will be over 2 140 000 000. And that's the problem. A modern 32-bit computer stores a "signed integer" data type, such as time_t, in 32 bits. The first of these bits is used for the positive/negative sign of the integer, while the remaining 31 bits are used to store the number itself.

The highest number these 31 data bits can store works out to exactly 2147 483 647. A time_t value of this exact number, 2 147 483 647, represents January 19, 2038, at 7 seconds past 3:14 AM Greenwich Mean Time. So, at 3:14:07 AM GMT on that fateful day, every time_t used in a 32-bit C or C++ program will reach its upper limit.

One second later, on 19-January-2038 at 3:14:08 AM GMT, disaster strikes.

When a signed integer reaches its max! imum value and then gets incremented, it wraps around to its lowest possible negative value. This means a 32-bit signed integer, such as a time_t, set to its maximum value of 2 147483 647 and then incremented by 1, will become -2 147 483 648.

Note that "-" sign at the beginning of this large number. A time_t value of -2 147 483 648 would represent December 13, 1901 at 8:45:52 PM GMT.

So, if all goes normally, 19-January-2038 will suddenly become 13-December-1901 in every time_t across the globe, and every date calculation based on this figure will go haywire. And it gets worse.
Most of the support functions that use the time_t data type cannot handle negative time_t values at all. They simply fail and return an error code.

Some, rather most organizations reject his CV today because he has changed jobs frequently (10 in 14 years). My friend, the 'job hopper' (referred here as Mr. JH), does not mind it.... well he does not need to mind it at all. Having worked full-time with 10 employer companies in just 14 years gives Mr. JH the relaxing edge that most of the 'company loyal' employees are struggling for today. Today, Mr. JH too is laid off like some other 14-15 year experienced guys - the difference being the latter have just worked in 2-3 organizations in the same number of years. Here are the excerpts of an interview with Mr. JH:

Q: Why have you changed 10 jobs in 14 years?
A: To get financially sound and stable before getting laid off the second time.

Q: So you knew you would be laid off in the year 2009?
A: Well I was laid off first in the year 2002 due to the first global economic slowdown. I had not got a full-time job before January 2003 when the economy started looking up; so I had struggled for almost a year without job and with compromises.

Q: Which number of job was that?
A: That was my third job.

Q: So from Jan 2003 to Jan 2009, in 6 years, you have changed 8 jobs to make the count as 10 jobs in 14 years?
A: I had no other option. In my first 8 years of professional life, I had worked only for 2 organizations thinking that jobs are deserved after lot of hard work and one should stay with an employer company to justify the saying 'employer loyalty'. But I was an idiot.

Q: Why do you say so?
A: My salary in the first 8 years went up only marginally. I could not save enough and also, I had thought that I had a 'permanent' job, so I need not worry about 'what will I do if I lose my job'. I could never imagine losing a job because of economic slowdown and not because of my performance. That was January 2002.

Q: Can you brief on what happened between January 2003 and 2009.
A: Well, I had learnt my lessons of being 'company loyal' and not 'money earning and saving loyal'. But then you can save enough only when you earn enough. So I shifted my loyalty towards money making and saving - I changed 8 jobs in 6 years assuring all my interviewers about my stability.

Q: So you lied to your interviewers; you had already planned to change the job for which you were being interviewed on a particular day?
A: Yes, you can change jobs only when the market is up and companies are hiring. You tell me - can I get a job now because of the slowdown? No. So one should change jobs for higher salaries only when the market is up because that is the only time when companies hire and can afford the expected salaries.

Q: What have you gained by doing such things?
A: That's the question I was waiting for. In Jan 2003, I had a fixed salary (without variables) of say Rs. X p.a. In January 2009, my salary was 8X. So assuming my salary was Rs.3 lakh p.a. in Jan 2003, my last drawn salary in Jan 2009 was Rs.24 lakh p.a. (without variable). I never bothered about variable as I had no intention to stay for 1 year and go through the appraisal process to wait for the company to give me a hike.

Q: So you decided on your own hike?
A: Yes, in 2003, I could see the slowdown coming again in future like it had happened in 2001-02. Though I was not sure by when the next slowdown would come, I was pretty sure I wanted a 'debt-free' life before being laid off again. So I planned my hike targets on a yearly basis without waiting for the year to complete.

Q: So are you debt-free now?
A: Yes, I earned so much by virtue of job changes for money and spent so little that today I have a loan free 2 BR flat (1200 sq. feet) plus a loan free big car without bothering about any EMIs. I am laid off too but I do not complain at all. If I have laid off companies for money, it is OK if a company lays me off because of lack of money.

Q: Who is complaining?
A: All those guys who are not getting a job to pay their EMIs off are complaining. They had made fun of me saying I am a job hopper and do not have any company loyalty. Now I ask them what they gained by their company loyalty; they too are laid off like me and pass comments to me - why will you bother about us, you are already debt-free. They were still in the bracket of 12-14 lakh p.a. when they were laid off.

Q: What is your advice to professionals?
A: Like Narayan Murthy had said - love your job and not your company because you never know when your company will stop loving you. In the same lines, love yourself and your family needs more than the company's needs. Companies can keep coming and going; family will always remain the same. Make money for yourself first and simultaneously make money for the company, not the other way around.

Q: What is your biggest pain point with companies?
A: When a company does well, its CEO etc will address the entire company saying, 'well done guys, it is YOUR company, keep up the hard work, I am with you." But when the slowdown happens and the company does not do so well, the same CEO etc will say, "It is MY company and to save the company, I have to take tough decisions including asking people to go." So think about your financial stability first; when you get laid off, your kids will complain to you and not your boss.

BIET - Student's death triggers unrest at engineering college.

BIET / Orissa: Tension ran high on Bhadrak Institute of Engineering & Technology campus in Bhadrak district on Monday, after a student died due to alleged delay in shifting him to the hospital.

Police sources said that as soon as the news of the death spread, hundreds of students
went berserk and burnt down at least three buses of the college and damaged two more buses and as many cars. They also damaged furniture, doors and windows.

"Property worth over Rs 60 lakh have been destroyed during the students' unrest," said a college official.

The deceased person has been identified as Samir Patnaik, a second-year (IT branch) diploma student, a native of Angul district.

"He complained of chest pain and fainted in the morning. When we searched for a vehicle to take him to the hospital, about 10 km from the campus, the vehicle was not available. Although, we did manage to take him to the hospital later, but there the doctors declared him dead," said one of his classmates.

Though sources in the hospital said he died a natural death due to heart attack, the students claimed that if they would have got the vehicle in time, he could have been saved. "There are no ambulances in a college where nearly 2,500 students are studying. It is a gross negligence on the part of college authorities," alleged a student.

The students gheraoed the college principal for hours and demanded Rs 5 lakh as compensation for the victim's family, an ambulance for each of the four hostels and a dispensary within the campus.

"The students' unrest was on till evening, as the college authorities failed to assure them of their demands. A police team has been deployed at the campus to avoid any untoward incident," inspector in-charge of Bhadrak Rural police station S C Patra said.

College authorities, however, pleaded their helplessness and Principal Narayan Chandra Kundu said, "The students had been provided with an ambassador at that time. But unfortunately the student could not be saved."

Professor began his class by holding up a glass with some water in it. He held it up for all to see & asked the students
"How much do you think this glass weighs?"
'50gms!' ..... '100gms!' .....'125gms' ...the students answered.
"I really don't know unless I weigh it," said the professor, "but, my question is:
What would happen if I held it up like this for a few minutes?"
'Nothing' …..the students said.
'Ok what would happen if I held it up like this for an hour?' the professor asked.
'Your arm would begin to ache' said one of the student
"You're right, now what would happen if I held it for a day?"
"Your arm could go numb, you might have severe muscle stress & paralysis & have to go to hospital for sure!"
….. ventured another student & all the students laughed
"Very good.
But during all this, did the weight of the glass change?"
asked the professor.
'No'…. Was the answer.
"Then what caused the arm ache & the muscle stress?"
The students were puzzled.
"What should I do now to come out of pain?" asked professor again.
"Put the glass down!" said one of the students
"Exactly!" said the professor.
Life's problems are something like this.
Hold it for a few minutes in your head & they seem OK.
Think of them for a long time & they begin to ache.
Hold it even longer & they begin to paralyze you. You will not be able to do anything.
It's important to think of the challenges or problems in your life,
But EVEN MORE IMPORTANT is to 'PUT THEM DOWN' at the end of every day before You go to sleep..
That way, you are not stressed, you wake up every day fresh &strong & can handle any issue, any challenge that comes your way!

ICICI ATM / Debit cards can be used at SBI ATMs to withdraw money and most shocking thing is, it does not ask for your PIN**. Even if it asks for pin and if u cancel it, it goes on to the next screen and enables you to withdraw cash. This security vulnerability was shown live on TV- 9 news channel at SBI ATM in Bangalore.So please take utmost care of your ICICI ATM / Debit cards to avoid any such misuse.
Please pass this to as many people as you know.

One smart Software engineer and his Project Manager were traveling towards Pune in a train.
Just Opposite to their seat, a beautiful girl was sitting along with her grand ma.
With in some time, Eye-Eye interactions started between Our Software engineer & that girl.
After some minutes, train started moving in to a tunnel and it was very dark.
Suddenly, every body heard a Kiss sound followed by a sound of slapping.
Every body remained silent, when the train came out of the tunnel.
Grand ma thought that," The Guy is a rogue; how dare he is? He has kissed my grand daughter! But my Grand daughter is genuine; she immediately slapped that guy."
PM thought that," I can't believe that this guy has kissed that girl! But it is unfair that she slapped me by mistake"
That girl thought that," I feel happy, when that guy kissed me, but I feel sorry that my grand ma has slapped him".
Finally, do u know what our clever Software engineer thought?
"This one minute in my life is wonderful, it hardly comes...because, at a time I have kissed a girl and also I have slapped my PM."

A few years ago, Prime Minister Mori was given some basic English conversation training before he visits Washington and meets president Bill Clinton...
The instructor told Mori Prime Minister, when you shake hand with President Clinton, please say 'how r u'. Then Mr. Clinton should say, 'I am fine, and you?' Now, you should say 'me too'. Afterwards we, translators, will do the work for you.'
It looks quite simple, but the truth is...
When Mori met Clinton , he mistakenly said 'Who r u?' (instead of 'How r u?'. )
Mr. Clinton was a bit shocked but still managed to react with humor: 'Well, I'm Hillary's husband, ha-ha...'

They're falling off the ladders, dropping the tape measures - the whole thing is just a mess. An Engineer comes along and sees what they're trying to do, walks over, pulls the flagpole out of the ground, lays it flat, measures it from end to end, gives the measurement to one of the managers and walks away.

After the Engineer has gone, one manager turns to another and laughs." See this idiot. We're looking for height and he gives the length!"

Moral: "No matter what good you do, Managers can always find fault with you".

The audience was in silence and shock.

Laughter and applause.

A week later, a top IT manager trained by the motivational speaker tried to crack this very effective joke at home. He was a bit foggy after a drink.

He said loudly, "The greatest years of my life were spent in the arms of a woman who was not my wife!"
The wife went wild with shock and rage.
Standing there for 20 seconds trying to recall the second half of the joke, the manager finally blurted out "... and I can't remember who she was!"

Petrol pump faruds in bangalore - applicable to EVERYWHERE

I would like to bring to your kind attention the "Great Indian Petrol
Pump
Fraud" happening all over Bangalore (and I believe all over India ) .

Today in the morning ,I saw the fuel gauge of my car touching
the
"Empty" sign,so I thought that while on my way to office , I will fill
petrol
worth 1000 Rs in my car.When I reached the petrol pump at 9:30 Am
today(24th
April 2008)(BP petrol pump near richmond road) I showed the crisp 1000
Rs
note to the attendant at the petrol pump and told him to fill 1000 Rs.I
repeated 1000 to him 2-3 times so that he registers 1000 Rs in his head
fill
the petrol for 1000 Rs.I repeatedly told him because of the past
experience
whenever I had asked him to fill petrol worth 1000 bucks at different
gas
stations(ie for eg. at Advaitha Gas station,near udapi garden BTM to
name one
of them),the attendant always filled 200 rs of petrol and said "Sir your
200
rs of petrol is filled" . I used to say i asked you fill 1000 Rs of
petrol
not 200 worth.He would look at me like an innocent kid and would start
filling the remaining 800 Rs of petrol.

But
this
procedure of 200+800 didn't stop at one petrol pump but gas attendants
at all
the petrol pumps followed this weird ritual.I could sense something
fishy but
not before losing money to this procedure 3-4 times.So coming back to
Today's
incident I asked the "Honest" petrol pump attendant to fill the petrol,
While
filling the petrol my attention was diverted towards the pollution check
centre at the same petrol pump but when I looked back at the meter
indicator,I was shocked to see the familiar "200" mark at the petrol
pump
meter.I told him again why didn't you fill for 1000 Rs.He said that he
heard
200 Rs.So I told him to fill 800 Rs of petrol also.After he had filled
the
petrol ,I got in the car and started towards my office.While on my way
to
office.I observed the fuel gauge in my car.It had moved from "Empty"
first to
half and then little further.But from my past experience that when I
used to
get 1000 rs of fuel filled in the empty fuel tank,It used to come to
certain
level but today it hadn't come till there.So I thought SHIT....I got
Duped
again.

After reaching office I checked the Internet for same
Frauds which had happened before my case.I was shocked to find that many
other people also faced the same problem of 200+800 and some bikes of
40+60
bucks(these petrol pump attendants don't leave anybody).I spoke to my
boss
and a colleague of mine at office they told me of the same incident.I
was
like shit,this problem is not only with me but with people all over
Bangalore.Basically people all over Bangalore (maybe all over india )
are
getting cheated in this ingenious

fraud which is promoted by our friendly neighbour hood petrol pump
owners and
their honchos gas attendants .

The ingenious technique these people follow is discussed below in
italics

When asked for diesel worth Rs. 500. The attendant filled up only Rs.
100.
noticing that I told him to fill for Rs. 500 but by that time he is done
with
100 so the attender said he will fill up for remaining Rs. 400...that is
when
he did a trick of as though he is resetting by playing games of hurry
burry
and continuing to fill and when he is done for Rs. 400 he asked for 500
(100+400) but in reality he only filed for 100+300 as he is not really
resetted the machine to zero even though it appears as he reset it.

; So after reading the messages on the website I went back to
the
petrol pump ,parked my car in middle of the petrol pump called the
attendant
and told him that you have cheated me of 200 rs of petrol instead of
filling
petrol worth of 1000 Rs you have filled the petrol worth only 800 rs ,I
told
him I am gonna sue your petrol pump and I want to write a complaint
against
the same .He got frightened said "Sorry Sir By mistake i have not reset
200
rs".He didn't ask me any more questions and directly filled 200 Rs of
petrol.

I wonder that BP ,IOC,HP talk about going in losses and hence they ask
govt.
to increase the price of diesel and petrol but in reality petrol pump
owners
are helping us save lots of oil by asking us to pay 1000 rs but giving
us
petrol worth 800.What a brilliant way to conserve oil and make profit
for
petrol pump owners .I guess people should know about the ingenious way
in
which petrol pumps owners helps us .(Pardon me for the sarcasm) :-)

let me add my two tips to the above....always watch the reading in the
meter.
Sometimes when you ask them to fill for 100rs, they will stop at 5.46
and ask
you again as if they didnot hear you and once you again yell 100, they
will
reset and fill for remaining 46rs.

The meter being a 4 digit one ,and unless you are carefull you wont be
able
to say for sure on whether he stopped at 5.46 or 54.6..so be
watchfull..for
me the notorius pumps are the one opposite to st antonys friary church
in
madiwala ,near to st johns hospital after siemens VDO and another one is
the
one near to silkboard ,after AXA on the left side of road when you go
from
BTM to silkboard.

again this is with the knowledge of petrol pump owners only.....
